Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few questions that you may have had about the SJMS Media Center with answers included.  If the question you have is not listed  here, please feel free to come by, call, or email me your question.

- Barbara Kinast - bkinast@mckinneyisd.net - 469.302.4930

Q:   When is the media center open?
A:   The media center is open from 8:15 am  until 4:25 pm every day, except  Fridays.  The media center closes at 4:00 pm on most Fridays.  During the school day, the media center is always open, unless there is a special event
or meeting taking place.

Q:   Can I purchase required reads in the media center?
A:   Yes you can.  ELAR teachers determine the required reads and will let you know when your required book or books is available for purchase in the media center.  Prices vary depending on the book.

Q: Can I visit the media center in the morning or at lunch?

A:   Yes, as long as you have a pass from a teacher.  If you are a member of chess club, you will get a pass from Mrs. Kinast or Mrs. Banks.

Q:   What can I do in the media center?
A:   It is a long list.  READ, search databases, conduct research, borrow books, do homework, access educational websites, attend meetings, play chess, listen to an MP3 book, read a magazine, study, and more.

Q:   What can’t I do in the media center?
A:   The following are not acceptable uses of the school media center:  non-educational games, printing images without express permission from a  teacher, accessing inappropriate content online, talking loudly, running,
sleeping……..you get the idea.

Q:   I can’t find good information for my research project by searching Google?   Is there another place I can look?
A:   YES!  You can go to one of our databases on the media center  homepage.  All you have to do is log in to your Destiny account on the  catalog.  The usernames and passwords are listed for you.  Mrs. Kinast
and Mrs. Banks can help you get started.

Q:   I can’t ever find anything interesting in the media center.  What books are  interesting?
A:  Everyone has unique interests.  Come and talk to me.  I am sure I can  help you find something that you enjoy.  Not everyone likes to read fiction novels and that is okay.  The media center has great nonfiction
books, biographies, graphic novels (“comic books”), magazines, and audio books.

Q:  I searched for the item I want but did not find it.  How can I get  it?
A:   Unfortunately, we cannot interlibrary loan items for students from other school media centers.   If you misspelled any words in the title or the name of the author, the catalog will not search properly.  Ask someone for help
if you aren’t sure of the spelling.  If we don’t own the item, I can put it  on my list of items to purchase.
