 DATES: April 1 (7th Writing, 8th Math), April 2 (7th Writing, 8th Reading), April 22 (6th Math, 7th Math, 8th Social Studies), April 23 (6th Reading, 7th Reading, 8th Science), April 24 (8th Social Studies), May 5 (Algebra/Geometry) Make sure your child gets a good night's rest and eats a healthy breakfast.
The students have been working hard, and I'm sure we'll see outstanding results on STAAR day. Please free to send a healthy snack from home. Grapes (boost energy), apple slices, pretzels, water, peppermints, etc. If your child brings a noisy food (chips), please transfer the food in to a Ziploc bag. These create less noise and will be less distracting. In the past, TAKS was not timed. However, with STAAR, the students must complete in four hours. We are not allowed to stop the test for snack break, but kids are allowed to eat while testing. Also, time does not stop if students take a restroom break. We have advised the kids about the new rules, but we appreciate your reminding them as well. 7th and 8th Grade students will eat lunch in their testing rooms on both testing days. Please prepare a sack lunch for them. Students who do not bring a lunch from home will need to purchase a sack lunch from the cafeteria upon arrival at school upon arriving at school. All students will have a sack lunch in their possession (from home or the cafeteria) before testing begins. Please don't schedule doctor or dentist appointments on these days, as your child will not be allowed to come back and finish the test. Also, please make sure your child leaves his/her cell phone at home on STAAR days. Thanks so much for your help. The 2014 SJMS Poetry Slam was yesterday, after school. Twenty-six students competed, five of which will go on to compete at the district level. Here is a video highlighting the event. Orchestra -
The SJMS non-varsity orchestra went to UIL contest in Allen. They received an ‘Excellent’ award in the concert portion and a “SUPERIOR” award in sight reading! They did a wonderful job!! Our Honor Orchestra received “Superior” ratings in both the concert and sight reading portion of UIL. In the words of Mrs. Pennington, "It was a great day in the orchestra world J Our kids were so sweet and well-behaved today! " We are ALL very proud of our orchestra students for displaying Tiger Pride through their fantastic behavior and performance. Way to go!  Student Government -
Over the weekend 5 Scott Johnson students travelled to Austin to compete in the YMCA Junior Youth and Government State Competition. This competition included hundreds of students from across the state. In order to qualify for this competition the students had to write an original legislative bill. Of the 4 bills submitted by Scott Johnson, 3 were passed by the House of Representatives. A legislative bill written by Jonathan Buckner and Chibunie Ugwaunze was passed and signed into law by Youth and Government. Of the hundreds of bills submitted only 8 were signed by the Governor, making this a top honor for Scott Johnson. 6th Grader Jonathan Buckner was awarded as Outstanding Delegate for McKinney. Throughout the weekend our delegation received several compliments on their outstanding debating ability and professionalism as delegates. Even though this was our first year at this competition we proved that we are the delegation to watch. The five delegates from Scott Johnson not only exhibited the four core values of the YMCA, but also every letter of Tiger PRIDE! Please congratulate Jonathan Bucker, Chubunie Ugwunze, Busira Lassisi, Kehana Cooper, and Ini Dim on their enormous success! |
